The Estée Lauder Cos. is reopening its Melville, N.Y., manufacturing facility in order to manufacture hand sanitizer, WWD has learned.
A spokeswoman for the company said: “The Estée Lauder Companies is proud to contribute to the broader COVID-19 relief efforts by reopening our Melville manufacturing facility this week to produce hand sanitizer for high-need groups and populations, including front-line medical staff. We are grateful to our employees who have worked tirelessly to make this possible. Compensated, employee volunteers will support this vital, meaningful effort.”
Earlier on Monday, Lauder pledged $2 million to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières, to support the organization’s coronavirus response in under-resourced and highly impacted countries.
The business joins many others in the beauty world that have stepped up to produce supplies as the global spread of COVID-19 continues. LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton is also producing hand sanitizers instead of luxury perfumes, and procuring face masks for health care workers. Coty Inc. is also working to produce hand sanitizer, and L’Oréal launched a campaign that included sanitizer and economic efforts.
